UNESCO Action slams ISIS Destroy Ancient City of Nimrud

UNESCO leader, Friday (03/06/2015), strongly condemned the destruction of the ancient city of Assyria, Nimrud in Iraq who carried the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).



"I strongly condemned the destruction of the historic site of Nimrud. I have discussed this issue with the leaders of the UN Security Council and the International Criminal Court (ICC)," said Irina Bokova UNESCO leader through an official statement.

"We can not remain silent. The destruction of a cultural heritage is a war crime. I appeal to all political and religious leaders in the world to oppose it. Because there is no justification whatsoever for the destruction of the cultural heritage of humanity like this," added Bokova.

Earlier, the Iraqi government preach ISIS using bulldozers destroying the ancient city of Nimrud which is the Assyrian empire relics dating back 3,500 years BC.

"UNESCO is determined to do anything to document and protect the historic heritage in Iraq and lead the fight against the sale of ancient artifacts that are used to finance terrorism," said Bokova.

Nimrud is the Arabic name for the ancient Assyrian city named Kalhu which is located south of the city of Mosul that is not far from the Tigris, Iraq. This ancient city has an area of ​​360 hectares and the ruins of Nimrud found within a radius of one kilometer from the village Noomanea, Nineveh province, Iraq.

Before destroying the ancient city of Nimrud, ISIS also recently released a video showing some of the group members damaging ancient statues Mosul city museum collection by using a large hammer and drill.
