Less Funds , UNRWA Suspend Aid to Gaza

The UN agency for Palestinian refugees ( UNRWA ) has suspended aid to Gazans , who were displaced by the Israel- Hamas war last year , due to lack of money in a large number of donors .

UNRWA Tuesday ( 27/1 ) said it has helped 66,000 families improve their homes or provide rent subsidies , but the agency has run out of funds .

The agency said it took 720 million dollars to help 96,000 families whose homes were damaged or destroyed . They are currently 585 million dollar shortfall .

UNRWA is the UN agency that was formed in 1949 to help the refugees and their descendants as a result of the war in 1948 and 1967 - the majority of the 1.8 million residents of Gaza .

The international community pledged 5.4 billion dollars for Gaza after the war for 50 days last year .

Robert Turner , head of UNRWA in Gaza , said that the promised money did not reach Gaza and the condition is " troubling and unacceptable . "

In last year's war , more than 2,200 Palestinians and 72 Israelis were killed . Many UN school building used as a temporary refuge for tens of thousands of Gazans .
